A drug in the benzodiazepine class called diazepam is marketed under the name Valium. Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, seizures, muscle spasms, and anxiety problems are all frequently treated with it. In order to lessen nervous system activity, valium increases the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a relaxing neurotransmitter in the brain.
