Seniors and TechnologySeniors and technology to some are like water and oil – they just don’t mix.  Though, times have certainly changed and now more than ever seniors and technology do go together! Today marks the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Web (read more here) and in honor of 25 years of the super highway we have put together our very own infographic highlighting seniors and technology.

Although seniors may not be as tech savvy as the younger generation, this does not mean that they are inept. With the increase in use of technology in general, there has been a substantial increase in seniors using social media and applications on mobile devices.

Caregivers, in particular, can highly benefit from the use of the internet, particularly in terms of social media, to find helpful tips and support to aid them during what can be a challenging time. By connecting with other caregivers or networks that can provide information, caregivers can enrich themselves and improve their ability to care for loved ones as well as find what they need to fulfill the support they need emotionally.

It is not just to learn about how to create a great tablescape for your next dinner party, or to see the pictures from last week’s birthday party. It is, in fact, because these sites are the newest and greatest marketing tools and they are right at everyone’s fingertips.

Those in healthcare and medicine have largely avoided social media. This is the greatest mistake any organization in any industry can make. Healthcare organizations should, and must, start using social media in order to become a part of the current conversations and to start new ones. Without a social media presence an organization may as well not exist. Those shunning social media as a marketing tool are missing out on the very best way to make their organizations well known and to create a positive online presence and public perception.

Infusing Technology into Discharge Planning Gabby Mujal

twchatLast Thursday’s #dpcomm integrated insightful questions and comments by @OpenPlacement and social worker @EBelluomini. The chat examined the intersection between technology and discharge planning and ways for the two may be inextricably and successfully linked.

@EBelluomini offered websites, apps, and tools available for both discharge case managers and patients. Patients with dialysis, for example, may explore this link. This app combines engaging activities for patients to use while receiving dialysis treatments. iTunes also offers an app known as COPD Tracker to help patients manage their health condition. Another tool mentioned by Ellen was Central Logic Connect, a patient discharge software that allows a case manager to follow up with patients at home and offers discharge recommendations. Tweet the Change You Want to See: Health Care Reform on Twitter Christy Rakoczy

HealthTweetI participated in a Symplur chat with the hashtag #SOSeniors held by Save Our Seniors (@SaveSeniors).  The discussion revolved heavily around allocation of government funding and support for long-term care programs as well as a call to action by patient advocates.

Symplur is a company dedicated to connecting individuals to the latest trends in healthcare and health technology. Their healthcare hashtag project has tackled the issue of complexity and variation in hashtags that may confuse people. Working on a unified hashtag topic grants access for providers and other interested parties to discuss in a shared space (conversing under the same hashtag). The diversity in participants is what draws a healthcare provider like myself to these chats. Patients and healthcare providers or organizations gather to discuss ways of reforming healthcare practice. A schedule of the current chats can be found here.
